Hiking in nature with a doctor’s prescription – what seems a little strange may become reality in a few years.
A clinical trial at the Institute of Ecomedicine at the Paracelsus Medical University of Salzburg (PMU) is investigating how short hikes combined with mindfulness training three times a week affect people with metabolic syndrome.
With a prevalence of nearly 25% in the general population, metabolic syndrome is a major lifestyle disease characterized by a cluster of health risk factors – including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal blood lipid levels – that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.
